NIV: Luke 2:1

In those days Caesar Augustus issued a decree that a census should be taken of the entire Roman world.

Theme: The theme of the verse revolves around leadership, societal law, governance, and obedience during ancient times. It also alludes to organization and census taking during Caesar's rule.

Emotions: The verse does not particularly carry a strong emotional tone. However, one can indirectly sense feelings associated with the rule of an emperor: obedience by the populace, authority, and perhaps unease or curiosity about the census.

Imagery: The verse brings up images of the Roman era - Caesar Augustus, a powerful ruler in his royal attire, issuing a decree with a stern countenance. One can also visualize a busy and tense scene as Roman officials prepare to take a census throughout the entire Roman Empire - scribes with their scrolls, citizens in queues, a bustling Roman market disrupted by this event.

Illustration: Depict Caesar Augustus in his royal attire announcing the decree amidst a mixed crowd of Roman citizens - some showing signs of obedience, some of curiosity, and others discontent. In the background, portray officials preparing to take the census, holding scrolls and quill pens, with a faint map of the Roman world splayed out on a table. The overall ambiance should reflect the grandeur and sternness of the Roman era.
