VOTD: John 8:31-32

NIV: John 8:31-32

To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, “If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”

Emotions: The feelings conveyed here are of affirmation, assurance, and liberation. Jesus provides reassurance to his Jewish followers that holding onto his teachings leads to being a true disciple. The declaration that 'the truth will set you free' conveys a profound sense of liberation and relief.

Imagery: The imagery within this verse can be seen in the concept of "knowing the truth" and the resulting freedom. It paints a picture of a person's progression from being bound by misconceptions, ignorance, or deceptions to a liberated state of enlightenment and understanding through the truth.

Illustration: Depict a disciple adhering to Jesus' teachings, represented by a path lined with words of scripture. At the beginning of the path, the disciple appears burdened and ensnared in chains. As they continue along the path, the chains start to break apart. Near the end of the path is a bright light signifying 'the truth,' and the figure is completely free of chains and exudes a sense of liberation and tranquility.
