Proverbs 17:9

Whoever would foster love covers over an offense, but whoever repeats the matter separates close friends.

The first part of the verse kindles feelings of compassion - a willingness to overlook faults or wrongdoings. The second part, however, brings out the pain or rejection one could feel due to repeated highlighting of mistakes or offenses.

Imagery: The verse paints a vivid picture of unity and love being cultivated through forgiving offenses or overlooking faults, akin to patching or covering up a wound, allowing it to heal. The second half conveys an entirely different image - that of a repeated offense being like a wedge, driven between close friends, causing them to drift apart.
