Verse of the day: Galatians 5:22-23
"But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law."
As we read this treasured verse from Galatians, we are graciously reminded of the beautiful fruits of the Holy Spirit — not fruits that we can cultivate of our own accord, but those that are birthed within us by the indwelling of the Holy Spirit. This verse is a bountiful orchard of truth, a vivid landscape painting of God's virtues that we are called to embody.
Picture a tree, standing tall and firm, with roots that spread deep and wide. The fruits of love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control hang ripe and ready from its branches. 'Against such things, there is no law' is ingrained into the tree's trunk, an emblem of the unyielding nature of these virtues.
Each fruit is a gift from the Spirit, a precious treasure that allows us to mirror Jesus to the world. Love, the greatest and first fruit on the list enables us to care deeply for others, joy animates our hearts with a deep-seated, divine happiness, and peace allows us to still our thoughts and fears in our stormy world. Forbearance instills a patience and tolerance that overlooks the shortfalls of others; kindness, goodness, faithfulness flow into acts of compassion, moral integrity, and loyalty. Gentleness cultivates an attitude of tenderness, while self-control enables us to resist temptations, stand firm in our faith, and live in accordance to the will of God.
Framed by the beautiful illustration of the tree, God calls us to live the kind of life that bears these fruits. Moreover, He promises us that 'against such things, there is no law'; that there are no barriers against such virtues, no rules that can hinder their growth. Rather, they are universally and eternally praised, and no earthly law can suppress their power.
Let us invite the Holy Spirit to till the soil of our hearts, making it fertile for these fruits to grow. It may not be an immediate process, but with faith, we will bloom just as the tree does, standing firm irrespective of the seasons, adorned with the fruits of the Spirit, offering the succulent taste of God's love to others. Let's strive for our lives to be a reflection of this visual metaphor, to be trees planted by rivers of water, bearing fruit in every season, leaves un-withering, and prospering in everything we do (Psalm 1:3).
