Verse of the day: 3John 2:3
"Beloved, I pray that in all respects you may prosper and be in good health, just as your soul prospers."
Beloved, what a tender and beautiful way to be addressed. The Apostle John begins his short letter not with a command, but with a heartfelt prayer that encapsulates the very heart of God for His children. He prays, '...that in all respects you may prosper and be in good health, just as your soul prospers.' In our modern world, we often get this formula backward. We chase outward prosperity—financial success, physical fitness, worldly influence—hoping that these external achievements will somehow bring peace to our inner selves. But the divine principle is precisely the opposite.
The truest measure of a blessed life begins on the inside. John’s prayer for our external well-being is hinged upon a crucial condition: 'just as your soul prospers.' The health of our soul is the standard, the foundation upon which all other forms of prosperity are built. So, we must ask ourselves, what does it mean for a soul to prosper? A prospering soul is one that is deeply rooted in the love of Christ, continually nourished by the living water of His Word. It is a soul that bears the fruit of the Spirit: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. It finds its contentment not in accumulating more, but in drawing nearer to the Source of all life. It is like a magnificent tree planted by streams of water, whose leaves do not wither and who yields its fruit in season.
This is the vision we must hold. Imagine your soul as a garden. Are you tending it daily? Are you pulling the weeds of anxiety, bitterness, and distraction? Are you watering it with prayer and time spent in God's presence? When we prioritize the health of our inner world, our perspective on the outer world begins to shift. We make decisions not from a place of scarcity and fear, but from a place of abundance and faith. Our relationships, our work, and even our physical health are brought into a better, more holy alignment. God is not against our prosperity or our health; He delights in blessing His children. But He desires for those blessings to flow from a heart that is whole, healthy, and wholly His.
Let us pray: Heavenly Father, thank You for this beautiful reminder to tend to the garden of our souls first and foremost. Teach me what it means to prosper in You. Help me to sink my roots deep into Your love and Your truth. As my soul prospers, I trust that You will care for every other aspect of my life according to Your perfect will and glorious riches. Amen.
