Verse of the day: Acts 20:24
"But none of these things move me, neither count I my life dear unto myself, so that I might finish my course with joy, and the ministry, which I have received of the Lord Jesus, to testify the gospel of the grace of God."
The Apostle Paul’s words in Acts 20:24 are among the most stirring declarations of purpose and perseverance in all of Scripture: “But none of these things move me, neither count I my life dear unto myself, so that I might finish my course with joy…” Here we see a soul utterly surrendered to the will of God, a heart captivated not by comfort or safety, but by mission and grace. Paul viewed life as a race—a divinely appointed course—and his ultimate aim was not mere survival but joyful completion.
The imagery of a “course” suggests movement, endurance, and intentional direction. In Paul’s world, athletics were a common metaphor for discipline and persistence. But this was no earthly contest for human applause; this was the spiritual race of faith. Every believer, too, runs such a course. Though our paths differ, the finish line is the same—to glorify Christ and testify to His grace.
The crown at the end of the path in our illustration symbolizes the reward of faithfulness—not earthly accolades, but the satisfaction of completing what God has assigned to us. It glows not with worldly shine but with the quiet brilliance of eternal joy. The steady, golden road is the life of obedience, sometimes rugged, sometimes smooth, always illuminated by the Spirit’s light. The background landscape stretches out, suggesting the vastness of God’s purpose and the small yet significant part we each play in His story.
In our daily lives, Paul’s attitude calls us away from self-centered calculation. The modern world urges us to cling tightly to comfort, recognition, and control. But the gospel of grace invites us to loosen our grip—to live not for self-preservation but for divine fulfillment. When Christ’s mission defines our steps, even hardships become holy ground.
May we, like Paul, learn to measure life not by length but by faithfulness. May we trust that every step, when surrendered to Jesus, draws us closer to the joy of finishing well.
Prayer: Lord Jesus, teach me to run my race with endurance and joy. Let no hardship deter me, no comfort distract me. Fix my heart on the finish line of Your glory, that I may testify to the beauty of Your grace until my journey is complete. Amen.
