Verse of the day: Colossians 4:5-6

"Be wise in the way you act toward outsiders; make the most of every opportunity. Let your conversation be always full of grace, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how to answer everyone."

There is something deeply beautiful about the way this verse calls us to live in the world. It does not tell us merely to speak more, argue better, or withdraw from those who believe differently. Instead, it invites us into a way of being: wise in action, alert to opportunity, and gracious in speech. In a hurried and reactive age, that kind of life feels both rare and holy.

“Be wise in the way you act toward outsiders” reminds us that our witness begins long before we open our mouths. People often encounter our faith first through our patience, our humility, our self-control, and the respect we show them. Wisdom here is not cleverness; it is love shaped by discernment. It is knowing that every interaction matters, and that our conduct can either open a door or close one.

“Make the most of every opportunity” suggests that our days are full of sacred moments disguised as ordinary ones: a brief conversation, a chance meeting, a word spoken at the right time. In the imagined manuscript illustration, this is why a gate or roadway is so fitting. The Christian figure stands at the threshold, where people come and go, because discipleship often happens at thresholds—in passing encounters, in public spaces, in moments we did not plan. The hourglass or shaft of light reminds us that such opportunities are precious and fleeting.

Then comes the most memorable image: “Let your conversation be always full of grace, seasoned with salt.” Grace means our words should nourish, heal, and honor. Salt means they should also carry truth, clarity, and preserving power. In the illustration, golden words flowing like vines from the speaker’s mouth express grace, while the tiny salt cellar represents speech that is not dull or empty, but meaningful and life-giving. Christian speech should never be harsh for harshness’s sake, nor bland in the name of peace. It should be both tender and true.

This verse calls us to become the kind of people who answer “everyone” well. Not with rehearsed formulas, but with hearts formed by Christ. Today, may our words carry grace, our minds carry wisdom, and our eyes remain open for the holy opportunities God places before us.
