Verse of the day: Philippians 3:20

"But our citizenship is in heaven. And we eagerly await a Savior from there, the Lord Jesus Christ,"

Your Heavenly Passport: More Than Just a Future Hope

Do you have a passport? It’s a small book, but it holds immense power. It declares who you are, where you belong, and grants you access to your home country. It’s a symbol of your identity and your rights. The Apostle Paul, living in the Roman Empire where citizenship was a source of immense pride and security, uses this very idea to give us one of the most grounding truths of our faith: "But our citizenship is in heaven."

Think about that for a moment. Your truest identity, the one that defines your ultimate reality, is not tied to your nation, your job, or your family name. Your passport has been stamped by the King of Kings. You are a citizen of heaven. This isn't just a comforting thought about where we go when we die; it is a reality that is meant to fundamentally shape how we live right now. To be a citizen of heaven is to be an ambassador on earth. We live here, but we operate under the laws, culture, and values of our true home. Our perspective shifts. The temporary crises of this world lose their ultimate power over us, and the fleeting pleasures of this life lose their ultimate allure.

This heavenly citizenship then fuels the second part of the verse: "And we eagerly await a Savior from there, the Lord Jesus Christ." Our hope is not in a political system or a social movement on earth. Our hope has a name, and He is coming from the place where our citizenship is already secure.

If we were to paint this reality, as the monks did in their beautiful illuminated manuscripts, we would see a world of two halves. Below, a pilgrim walks a winding, earthly road, a landscape of muted colors and shadows. But this pilgrim is not lost. In their hand, they hold a scroll—their heavenly passport. And their gaze is not on the dirt path ahead but is lifted upward. Above them, the heavens are not empty but blaze with golden light, revealing a glorious celestial city. From this city, a beam of light shines down, illuminating the pilgrim’s face. That light is the promise. That upward gaze is our eager expectation.

To eagerly await is not to sit idly. It is an active, hopeful, and life-shaping posture. It means that every day, we live in anticipation of our coming King. When you feel like a stranger in this world, remember: you are. But you are not homeless. You are an ambassador with a sacred duty, holding a passport to a kingdom that cannot be shaken, eagerly waiting for the King to come and finally bring you home.
