Verse of the day: 1 John 5:12

"Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life."

In the quiet hours of reflection, 1 John 5:12 cuts through every layer of pretense: life itself is not earned, inherited, or discovered apart from a living relationship with Jesus, the Son. To “have” Him is no mere intellectual nod but a personal, transformative holding—much like a branch drawing sap from the vine. This possession grants not only future hope but present vitality: the pulse of forgiveness, the breath of purpose, the steady rhythm of joy that circumstances cannot still. Conversely, to lack the Son is to dwell in a landscape where every apparent gain eventually withers; the verse refuses to soften the reality that existence without Christ is existence without life in its truest sense.

When I imagine this truth rendered in a medieval illuminated manuscript, the visual metaphors become a kind of silent sermon. At the heart of the page, Christ stands robed in gold, extending a luminous orb that pulses with inner light. From that orb, delicate vines unfurl across the vellum, their leaves and blossoms nourished by the cross that rises behind Him. These vines curl protectively around a kneeling figure whose open hands receive the light; the same tendrils reach upward into a canopy of fruit, symbolizing the abundant life promised in John 15. In the margin, a second figure stands alone, clutching brittle twigs that crumble into dust—an image of the emptiness the verse warns against. The artist’s choice of flourishing greenery against barren branches is no accident; it mirrors the spiritual ecology of the text. Gold leaf catches the eye first, reminding us that the source of life is heavenly and radiant, not of our own making. Even the tiny marginal lilies blooming from cracked tombs whisper resurrection hope to any who turn toward the Son.

As you gaze on such an illustration, may the imagery move from page to heart. Ask yourself not merely whether you admire the Son from afar, but whether you truly hold Him—receiving His life into every dry corner of your days. In that possession lies the only life worth having.
