VOTD: Luke 2:8-11
And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord.
Theme: The theme of this Bible verse is divine announcement or revelation. It summarizes a critical event in the Christian story, the birth of Jesus Christ, the Savior of humanity. It highlights God's posting of heavenly signs and angels to announce this cardinal event. It's about comfort in the midst of fear, revelation, and the joy of salvation.
Emotions: The piece stirs several emotions, the first being fear, as the shepherds were terrified when the angel and the glory of the Lord appeared suddenly in the middle of the night. However, this fear is quickly replaced by comfort when the angel asks them not to be afraid, and joy as they learn about the birth of a Savior which brings hope and happiness not only to them but to all the people.
Imagery: The verse creates vivid imagery of a serene, night-time pastoral scene interrupted by a glorious and awe-inspiring display of divine light. First, there is the calm and peaceful image of shepherds in a field at night, tending to their flocks under the silent watch of stars. This tranquil scenery dramatically changes with the sudden appearance of an angel and the radiant glory of the Lord illuminating the dark fields.
Illustration: Create a piece that showcases the stark contrast between the serene night in the field with shepherds tending their flocks and the sudden, awe-inspiring brilliance of an angel appearing before them. The illustration should depict the fear in the shepherds' faces, replaced quickly by a sense of peace and joy as the angel delivers the good news. Use warm shades of light to illustrate the divine glow from the angel against the cool, dark shades of a pastoral night scene. The illustration could include stars shining down on the field, the mesmerized shepherds, and the angel standing before them, holding out a hand to show peace, the divine light casting long shadows behind them.
