As the Psalmist exclaims in Psalm 119:64, "The earth, O Lord, is full of thy mercy: teach me thy statutes." There is a striking movement in this single breath. The writer begins with wide-angle wonder, observing that creation is not vacant, cold, or indifferent. Instead, it is an overflowing vessel of God’s steadfast love ( chesed ). Every sunrise, every falling rain, and every breath of wind is an emissary of divine kindness. Yet, rather than remaining in passive admiration, this awareness immediately drives the soul to its knees with a single petition: Teach me. The Sacred Craft of the Soul In the quiet scriptoriums of the Middle Ages, an illuminator knew that parchment had to be carefully scraped, smoothed, and prepared long before the first stroke of gold leaf could be applied. To rush the preparation was to ruin the manuscript. Proverbs 22:6 speaks of parenting and discipleship with that same sacred patience: "Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it."
