Verse of the day: Joel 2:23
"Be glad, people of Zion, rejoice in the Lord your God, for he has given you the autumn rains because he is faithful. He sends you abundant showers, both autumn and spring rains, as before."
There are seasons when the ground of life feels hard beneath our feet. Prayers seem to disappear into silence. Plans fail to take root. We keep sowing—showing up, trusting, serving—but see little evidence that anything is growing.
Joel speaks to people who knew such desolation. Yet his call is startling: “Be glad… rejoice in the Lord your God.” Their joy is grounded not in denial of hardship but in the character of God. Rain is coming because God is faithful.
In the biblical world, the autumn rain softened sunbaked soil so seed could be planted. The spring rain came later, nourishing the crop before harvest. One rain made a beginning possible; the other brought that beginning toward completion. Together they form a beautiful picture of grace. God meets us when the soil must first be broken open, and he remains with us while hidden roots slowly become fruit.
For the illuminated manuscript image, Zion appears as a golden city on a hill, surrounded by fields changing from barren brown to living green. This contrast mirrors the way hope enters our desolate places. The cracked earth is not erased from the picture; it becomes the ground upon which renewal is revealed. Our wounds and disappointments need not be hidden before God. They may become the very places where his mercy is most clearly seen.
Silver and gold lines of rain descend from a deep blue heaven. The gold suggests that ordinary rain carries extraordinary meaning: creation itself bears witness to the generosity of its Maker. A divine hand raised in blessing reminds us that the gift points beyond itself to the Giver. The people lift their faces, not merely toward fuller fields, but toward the Lord.
Wheat, vines, birds, and grazing sheep fill the border because divine restoration is abundant. God’s care is not always dramatic; often it comes drop by drop—through daily bread, a timely word, renewed courage, or strength sufficient for one more faithful step.
Perhaps you are living between the rains. The seed has been planted, but the harvest is not yet visible. Let this verse invite you to hopeful patience. The God who prepares the soil is also the God who completes the growing. Rejoice, not because every field is already green, but because the faithful Lord has not abandoned the field.
