Verse of the day: Hebrews 10:30-31

"For we know him who said, “Vengeance is mine; I will repay.” And again, “The Lord will judge his people.” It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God."

Hebrews 10:30–31 confronts us with a truth modern hearts often resist: God is not only loving and merciful; He is also perfectly holy and just. “Vengeance is mine; I will repay” does not describe uncontrolled anger or human spite. Divine vengeance is the measured response of a righteous God who sees every wrong clearly and judges without bias. Because justice belongs to Him, believers are released from the burden of retaliation. We do not need to nurse resentment, settle every score, or make ourselves the final judges of those who wound us. We may entrust every injury to the One who knows the whole story.

Yet the passage turns its warning toward God’s own people: “The Lord will judge his people.” Belonging to Him is not permission to treat sin casually. Grace is never an excuse for deliberate rebellion; it is the holy invitation to draw near through Christ with sincere faith, grateful obedience, and reverent endurance. The fear described here is not merely nervous anxiety. It is the trembling recognition that the God we approach is alive, sovereign, and morally pure. Nothing is hidden from Him, and no empty profession can deceive Him.

The illustration’s central image—a solitary figure held in immense, radiant hands—expresses this solemn reality. To fall into God’s hands is to stand entirely within His authority. Those hands cannot be escaped, manipulated, or overpowered. Yet for those who trust in Christ, they are also the hands that save, restore, discipline, and keep. The restrained crimson accents recall that the judgment our sin deserves was borne by Jesus. The cross does not make holiness less serious; it reveals how serious sin truly is and how costly divine mercy has been.

This verse calls us to examine our hearts. Are we harboring vengeance? Are we presuming upon grace while resisting repentance? Today, release personal judgment to God, confess what His Spirit brings to light, and cling afresh to Christ.

Living God, teach me to fear You rightly, trust Your justice completely, and receive Your mercy humbly. Cleanse me from hidden sin, free me from bitterness, and lead me in faithful obedience. May I rest in Your hands not with hardened defiance, but with reverence, repentance, and hope. Amen.
