Verse Of The Day: Mark 9:35

NIV: Mark 9:35

Sitting down, Jesus called the Twelve and said, “Anyone who wants to be first must be the very last, and the servant of all.”

Theme: The overarching theme of this verse, derived from the book of Mark (Mark 9:35), is humility and service. It emphasizes the Christian principle that true greatness comes not from achieving power or status but from serving others.

Emotions: The emotions evoked are respect (for Jesus and his teachings), introspection (on the nature of one's aspirations and actions), and humility (learning to put others before oneself). To some extent, there may be a feeling of surprise given the counterintuitive nature of this advice coming from someone held in high regard by others.

Imagery: The image of Jesus sitting down with the Twelve apostles suggests a solemn and intimate sermon or discussion. The contrasting images of being first and last and also a servant further underline the importance of the lesson.

Illustration: Draw a scene of Jesus sitting down, teaching the Twelve in a simple, solemn, and intimate setting. The disciples show a range of reactions from surprise to introspection. The image should radiate a mystical aura highlighting the importance of this counterintuitive wisdom. Surrounding them, depict a variety of people from different walks of life, illustrating those they are meant to serve: the poor, the sick, the elderly, and the young. As a subtle underline, the person in the crowd who seems the 'least' among them could be placed at the forefront, symbolizing their importance in this teaching.
