VOTD: Matthew 7:12

NIV: Matthew 7:12

So in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you, for this sums up the Law and the Prophets.

Theme: The overarching theme of this verse is the principle of reciprocity and empathy. It infers that one should always treat others as one wishes to be treated. This theme also extends to encompass the broader concepts of love, respect, and understanding.

Emotions: This verse invokes feelings of introspection, empathy, and compassion. It encourages individuals to examine their actions towards others critically, thereby making them more conscientious and careful in their actions. The feelings of mutual respect, fairness, and equitable treatment of others are also strongly evoked.

Imagery: The powerful imagery in this verse is not explicit but rather implicit in its meaning. It encourages one to visualize a world where everyone treats each other with kindness, respect, and dignity, similar to how they would want to be treated. One could imagine a circle of individuals, representing humanity, exchanging acts of kindness and love, denoting the reciprocity outlined in this verse.

Illustration: Create an artwork showing a variety of people - people from different races, ages, and backgrounds - interconnected in a circle, giving and receiving actions of kindness to one another. The actions could be represented symbolically, with icons like helping hands, gifts, loving gestures, etc. At the center of the circle, place a pair of scales perfectly balanced, symbolizing fairness, equality, and reciprocity. This will visually represent the 'Golden Rule' of treating others as one wishes to be treated.
