Verse Of The Day: Psalm 103:17-18

NIV: Psalm 103:17-18

But from everlasting to everlasting the Lord’s love is with those who fear him, and his righteousness with their children’s children— with those who keep his covenant and remember to obey his precepts.

Theme: These verses bring forth the theme of God's unchanging and everlasting love. This love is conditional, given to those who fear Him, obey His commandments, and abide in His covenant. Another strong theme highlighted here is God’s Covenant. The fact that God’s righteousness also goes on to their children's children signifies generational blessings and the long-lasting impact of obeying God's laws.

Emotions: The feelings conveyed are of warmth, reassurance, devotion, discipline, security, and hope. Devotion and discipline are required from the individuals, guaranteed by their adherence to his commandments. In return, they are awarded with the comforting and secure presence of God's eternal love, a love that doesn't falter or change over time.

Imagery: Imagery in these verses comes through the phrases like "from everlasting to everlasting," evoking a sense of time immemorial and infinite love of God. The phrase "children's children" brings function to the progression of the generations and illustrates a cycle of love, obedience, and blessings passing down through ages.

Illustration: A tree that represents different generations of a family could be a great illustration idea. The roots of the tree represents the commandments of God that gives it grounding and stability. The trunk of the tree signifies the individual who is mindful of God's laws and abides by them. The branches that spread out could symbolize God's infinite love and his righteousness that spans infinitely. The fruits and leaves of the tree could represent "children's children", who are benefactors of God's love passed down through generations. A sunrise or sunset in the background can signify the "from everlasting to everlasting" timeline. Over all, this illustration conveys feelings of warmth, devotion, continuity, and the enduring presence of divine love.
