Verse Of The Day: Matthew 1:20-21

Matthew 1:20-21

But after he had considered this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, “Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.”

Theme: This passage presents the themes of divine intervention, prophetic revelation, faith, courage, and salvation. An angel of the Lord appears in a dream, signifying divine intervention and communication. The predicted birth of Jesus, His naming and mission positions the theme of prophetic revelation. On a more human level, the message to Joseph indicates faith and courage, as he is asked to believe in the miraculous conception of his wife, Mary.

Emotions: The main emotions conveyed in these verses are wonder, reverence, fear, reassurance, anticipation, and commitment. The wonder and reverence come from the angelic visitation and profound message. Fear arises from the uncertainty Joseph initially faces, but reassurance follows since the message comes from a divine source. Anticipation and commitment are portrayed by the angel prophesying the birth of Jesus and His divine mission.

Imagery: The imagery evoked here is incredibly powerful and ethereal. The angel, as a divine messenger, appearing in a dream exudes a surreal and celestial atmosphere. The image of Joseph, contemplating this significant responsibility is a strong human element. It also includes the vision of Mary, carrying the child from the Holy Spirit, introducing a mystical quality. It brings forth the divine yet humble circumstances that will surround the birth of Jesus.

Illustration: Draw a scene of Joseph, deep in troubled contemplation under a star-filled night sky. Surrounding him, the protective yet translucent image of an angel speaks to him in his dream. The angel, radiating a soft heavenly glow, points towards a stylized image of Mary in a distant, dream-like cloud, tenderly cradling her yet unseen pregnancy. The foreground could show elements silently reflecting Joseph’s life as a humble carpenter. The overall mood of the picture should resonate with prophetic depth and celestial intervention within the mundanity of mortal life. Incorporate colors that signify wonder, divinity, and the blend of celestial and earthly life.
