Verse of the day: Matthew 7:13-14

"“Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it."

The Two Gates: A Fork in the Soul's Road

Every day, we face choices. Most are small: what to eat, what to wear, which route to take to work. But in His Sermon on the Mount, Jesus presents us with the ultimate choice, the one that defines the entire trajectory of our lives. He paints a vivid picture not of multiple branching paths, but of a single, stark fork in the road. There are only two gates, two roads, and two destinations.

Imagine this verse as an illustration in a medieval manuscript. On one side, there is a magnificent, wide gate. It’s a grand arch, shimmering with gold, beckoning everyone to a road that is broad, smooth, and gently slopes downhill. It’s a party! The road is crowded with laughing, carefree people from every walk of life. This is the path of least resistance. It’s the way of popular opinion, of cultural acceptance, of doing what feels good and easy. It requires no effort, no sacrifice, no introspection. But look where this bustling highway leads: to “destruction.” The easy road, the one traveled by the majority, ends in ruin. Its initial promise of freedom is a devastating illusion.

Now, look at the other side of the page. The gate is small, humble, and narrow. To enter, you’d have to leave your baggage behind, stoop low, and go through one at a time. The road beyond is steep, rocky, and difficult. Only a few people are on it, and they are struggling. This is the path of intention, of discipline, of choosing God’s will over our own. It’s the road of saying “no” to ourselves and “yes” to Christ. It’s unpopular, it’s demanding, and at times, it can feel lonely.

But look at the faces of these few travelers. They are not faces of despair, but of determination. Their eyes are fixed on the destination. For this narrow, difficult road leads to one place: “life.” Not just existence, but true, abundant, eternal life in the presence of God. The struggle is real, but it is purposeful. Every sharp rock and thorny branch on this path is part of a journey toward ultimate joy and peace.

This ancient image is our daily reality. We stand before these two gates every morning. The wide gate of conformity, comfort, and self-will is always inviting. But Jesus calls us to the narrow one. He asks us to choose the intentional path, the one that requires us to lay down our pride and follow Him. It is not an easy journey, but it is the only one that leads home. Which road will you walk today?
