Verse of the day: Proverbs 23:24
"The father of the righteous will greatly rejoice, And he who fathers a wise son will be glad in him."
A Father's Greatest Treasure
What brings a parent joy? We often think of the big moments: a graduation, a wedding, the birth of a grandchild. These are wonderful, peak experiences that fill a parent’s heart with pride and happiness. But the book of Proverbs points us toward a different kind of joy—one that is deeper, more constant, and ultimately more fulfilling. Proverbs 23:24 tells us, "The father of the righteous will greatly rejoice, And he who fathers a wise son will be glad in him."
Notice what the verse doesn’t say. It doesn’t say the father of a wealthy son, a famous son, or a powerful son will rejoice. The source of this profound gladness isn’t external achievement, but internal character. The two pillars of this joy are righteousness and wisdom. Righteousness is about living with integrity, a moral compass aligned with God’s truth. Wisdom is the skill of applying that truth to everyday life with discernment and grace. This is the legacy that truly endures, and seeing it flourish in your child is a parent’s ultimate reward.
If we were to capture this verse in a medieval illuminated manuscript, we wouldn’t see a son receiving a trophy or a crown. Instead, we would see a scene of quiet, profound connection. An aged father, his face radiating peace, rests under a flourishing olive tree, its branches heavy with fruit. His hand is on the shoulder of his son, who stands beside him holding an open book.
Each element is a metaphor. The fruit-bearing tree is the son’s life—well-rooted, strong, and producing good things for the world. The father gets to rest in the shade of his son's integrity and taste the sweet fruit of his character. The open book in the son’s hand isn’t just any book; it symbolizes God’s Word, the source of all true wisdom. The son’s life is built not on his own cleverness, but on a foundation of divine truth. This is what brings the father such deep-seated gladness. It's a joy that comes from knowing your child is securely anchored to something eternal.
This beautiful verse also gives us a glimpse into the heart of our Heavenly Father. How He must "greatly rejoice" when He sees His children walking in righteousness and wisdom, living out the truth of the Gospel. Our lives of faith, our choices of integrity, our pursuit of Christ-centered wisdom—these bring gladness to the very heart of God.
So, whether you are a parent, a mentor, or simply a son or daughter, consider the legacy you are building. Are you planting the seeds of righteousness and wisdom? And are you living a life that would bring that deep, abiding joy to your parents on earth, and ultimately, to your Father in heaven? This is the greatest treasure we can ever give or receive.
