Verse of the day: Philippians 3:14

"I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus."

There are days when “pressing on” feels inspiring. There are other days when it simply means taking one more faithful step.

Paul’s words in Philippians 3:14 are not the boast of someone who believes he has mastered the spiritual life. They are the confession of a pilgrim who knows he has not yet arrived. He does not remain trapped by yesterday’s failures, nor does he settle comfortably into yesterday’s successes. His attention is fixed ahead: “I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.”

Imagine this verse pictured in a medieval illuminated manuscript. A solitary pilgrim climbs a steep road through a dark landscape. Behind him lie broken chains and abandoned burdens. Ahead, high above the shadows, Christ stands in golden light, holding a crown. A narrow beam of radiance reaches from Christ to the traveler, illuminating the next part of the path.

Each detail tells part of the spiritual story.

The winding road reminds us that growth is rarely quick or straight. We encounter valleys of grief, forests of confusion, and thorns of temptation. Yet difficulty does not mean we have lost the way. Sometimes the hardest stretch of the road is precisely where perseverance becomes faith.

The broken chains represent what grace enables us to leave behind. We may remember our sins and wounds, but we no longer have to wear them as our identity. In Christ, the past can instruct us without imprisoning us.

The crown is not a trophy for outperforming other travelers. Paul’s race is not a competition against other believers. The prize is the fullness of life with Christ—the One who waits at the summit and also strengthens us on the climb. We press on not to persuade God to call us, but because he has already called us heavenward.

Finally, the golden beam reminds us that Christian perseverance is a response to divine grace. God’s light reaches us before we reach the destination. It reveals enough of the road for today’s step.

Wherever you find yourself, do not despise that next small act of faithfulness. Pray again. Forgive again. Resist again. Hope again. Christ is not merely waiting at the end of your journey; he is drawing you forward now. Press on—not in anxious self-reliance, but in the confidence that the One who calls you is also your goal, your strength, and your prize.
