Verse of the day: Isaiah 33:22

"For the Lord is our judge, the Lord is our lawgiver, the Lord is our king; it is he who will save us."

Isaiah 33:22 gives us a remarkable picture of God: “For the Lord is our judge, the Lord is our lawgiver, the Lord is our king; it is he who will save us.” In a world where authority can feel cold, unreliable, or self-serving, this verse invites us to see God’s authority differently. He is not divided against himself. The One who judges is the One who gives the law; the One who reigns is the One who saves.

God as Judge means that evil does not have the final word. He sees what is hidden: every injustice, every wound, every act of faithfulness that no one else notices. His judgment is not careless condemnation; it is the perfect justice of the One who knows the whole truth and loves what is good.

God as Lawgiver reminds us that his commands are not arbitrary restrictions. His law reveals the shape of life as it was meant to be lived: loving God, loving neighbor, speaking truth, practicing mercy, and walking humbly. When our hearts are confused and our culture offers competing voices, God’s word becomes a steady lamp for our path.

God as King declares that no earthly power is ultimate. Nations rise and fall, leaders disappoint, and our personal circumstances may seem beyond our control. Yet Christ reigns. His kingship is unlike the kingdoms of this world, because his throne is marked by grace. He does not merely demand allegiance; he gives himself for his people.

This is why the final phrase shines so brightly: “It is he who will save us.” Salvation is not ultimately a burden we carry. It is God’s work, received in trust. We respond with obedience, but our hope rests not in our ability to rescue ourselves. Our hope rests in the Lord.

An illuminated manuscript could portray this truth through Christ seated on a golden throne, crowned as King, holding the book of the law, and surrounded by symbols of righteous judgment. Yet below him, the people lift their faces not in terror but in prayerful hope. Gold speaks of his glory; the open book of his wisdom; the crown of his sovereign love; and the flowing river of life of his saving mercy.

Today, bring your uncertainty before the Judge who is just, your confusion before the Lawgiver who is wise, and your fear before the King who saves. His authority is not against you. In Christ, it is your refuge.
