The Sacred Art of Letting Go

Our human nature is tirelessly transactional. When the crowd gathered before Jesus along the shores of Galilee, fresh from the miracle of the loaves and fishes, their immediate instinct was to ask for a checklist: “What must we do to do the works of God?” They wanted a metric, a series of heroic spiritual tasks by which they could secure heaven’s favor and earn their daily bread.
We are not so different. We often approach our spiritual lives as laborers carrying heavy ledgers, calculating our worth through ceaseless striving, moral achievements, and religious activity.
Yet Christ’s response arrests our frantic momentum. He collapses the plural "works" into a singular, startling reality: “This is the work of God, that you believe in Him whom He has sent.”
In medieval illuminated manuscripts, this divine exchange was often depicted with profound visual wisdom. While human labor was represented by heavy tools, calloused hands, and furrowed brows, faith was painted as an open palm bathed in gold leaf. Gold in sacred art represents uncreated, divine light—something human hands cannot manufacture, only receive. At the foot of the throne, the soul is drawn casting aside its measuring rods and iron tools, choosing instead to gaze upon Christ, the Sent One.
Notice the quiet borderwork of such illuminations: stalks of golden wheat and twisting grapevines. A branch does not strain and sweat to produce fruit; it simply abides in the vine, drawing life from the sap that flows from the root. To "believe" in Biblical thought is not merely intellectual assent; it is an active resting of your whole weight upon the trustworthiness of Jesus.
Today, Christ invites you to lay down the exhausting burden of self-justification. The greatest work you can offer God is not the frantic building of your own spiritual resume, but the quiet, courageous surrender of your trust. Open your hands, let go of the tools of striving, and rest in the One who has already accomplished it all.
