Verse of the day: Luke 12:6-7
"Are not five sparrows sold for two pennies? Yet not one of them is forgotten by God. Indeed, the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Don’t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows."
We often measure worth by visible things: productivity, influence, wealth, appearance, or the approval of others. Jesus offers a radically different measure. He points to five sparrows sold for two pennies—creatures so common that their market value was almost nothing—and declares that not one is forgotten by God.
Forgotten is a powerful word. Many fears arise from the suspicion that we have disappeared from view: that our prayers go unheard, our labor is unnoticed, or our pain is too small to matter. Yet Jesus does not merely say that God sees humanity in general. He says that the very hairs of our heads are numbered. Divine care reaches beyond categories and crowds. God knows each life in its particularity.
For the illuminated manuscript illustration, the open wicker cage represents the ways the world counts and confines us. The two coins upon the merchant’s table symbolize every shallow calculation of human value. They ask, “What are you worth?” according to usefulness or demand. But the sparrows rising from the cage reveal heaven’s answer: life cannot be reduced to a price.
At the center, Christ holds one sparrow gently while blessing an anxious figure. This image does not suggest that faith prevents hardship. Sparrows still appear fragile, and human beings still experience uncertainty. Rather, the open hand of Christ declares that fragility is never the same as abandonment. We may be vulnerable without being forgotten.
Fine lines of gold woven through the person’s hair visualize God’s intimate knowledge. Gold is used not because hair itself is magnificent, but because divine attention makes even the smallest detail shine. The border’s wheat, thorns, and tiny birds gathers ordinary creation into a sacred pattern. Nothing lies outside God’s notice.
“Don’t be afraid” is therefore more than comforting advice. It is an invitation to live from our God-given worth. We need not earn the gaze that already rests upon us with love. When anxiety whispers that we are overlooked, the sparrows preach a quiet sermon: the God who remembers them remembers us. Today, let that truth loosen fear’s cage. You are known, held, and worth more than you can measure.
