Verse of the day: Ephesians 2:8-9

"For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— not by works, so that no one can boast."

Some days, we carry an invisible ledger. We record the patience we managed, the prayer we remembered, the kindness we offered. On the other side, we enter our failures: the sharp reply, the neglected neighbor, the familiar sin. Then we wonder whether the balance is enough for God.

Ephesians 2:8–9 interrupts that exhausting calculation: “For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith.” Salvation is not the wage of a successful spiritual life. It is God’s gift.

This does not make our choices meaningless. It changes the ground beneath them. We do not love our neighbor to persuade God to save us; we learn to love because God has first loved us. The following verse describes us as God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works. Grace does not leave us unchanged. It frees us to act without turning every act into evidence for our own worthiness.

Imagine this truth painted on a medieval manuscript page. A solitary figure kneels beneath a stream of gold. There is no purse extended toward heaven, no scroll listing achievements. Only open hands.

Those hands are the heart of the illustration. They picture faith not as a heroic accomplishment, but as trust in the One who gives. Even trembling hands can receive a gift. Our confidence rests not in the perfection of our grasp, but in the generosity of God.

Nearby lie a closed ledger and a crown. The ledger stands for our attempts to make God’s welcome depend on a favorable tally. The crown represents the desire to take credit, to stand above others because we believe we have earned our place. Grace gently removes both burdens. We need neither prove our superiority nor despair over our inadequacy.

Within the golden light is a cross. The gift is not an abstract kindness: it comes through Jesus Christ. Along the page’s border, a vine bears fruit, reminding us that gratitude can grow into mercy, courage, generosity, and service.

Today, notice where you are still bargaining with God. Then imagine opening your hands. You can bring your failures honestly, without disguising them, and offer your obedience gratefully, without presenting an invoice.

Gracious God, teach me to receive what I cannot earn. Quiet my boasting and my fear. Let the gift of your salvation take root in me, and make my life fruitful in love. Amen.
