Verse of the day: Isaiah 55:6

"Seek the Lord while he may be found; call on him while he is near."

At the Open Gate

It is easy to imagine that seeking God must begin with a long journey. We picture ourselves becoming wiser, steadier, or more worthy before we can draw near. But Isaiah’s invitation begins somewhere else: “Seek the Lord while he may be found; call on him while he is near.”

The surprising word is near. The verse does not describe a God hiding behind an impossible task. It calls us to answer a presence already offered. Prayer can begin before our thoughts are orderly. A return to God can begin while we are still uncertain how to change. We can call from the place where we actually stand.

That is why the imagined manuscript illustration shows a traveler at an open garden gate. The traveler has not reached the end of the road or shed every burden. One foot still touches its shadows. Yet light crosses the threshold and falls on the traveler first. The gold is a picture of grace: God’s welcome precedes our confident steps.

A spring runs through the garden, echoing Isaiah’s earlier call to those who thirst to come to the waters. It reminds us that seeking the Lord is not simply a demand to try harder. It is an invitation to receive what we cannot manufacture—mercy, renewal, and life. The first light of dawn lends the scene its urgency. Morning will not wait for us to settle every question before we turn toward it.

“While he may be found” asks us not to confuse delay with preparation. There are conversations we mean to have, prayers we mean to pray, wrongs we mean to acknowledge. We may keep postponing them until a better version of ourselves arrives. This verse gently interrupts that habit. Call now, not because God is reluctant, but because his nearness is a gift worth answering.

Today, seeking may look like a quiet prayer on the way to work, an honest confession, or a few attentive minutes with Scripture. The step can be small. The gate in the picture is open.
