Verse of the day: Proverbs 1:8-9

"My son, hear the instruction of thy father, and forsake not the law of thy mother: For they shall be an ornament of grace unto thy head, and chains about thy neck."

“My son, hear.” Spiritual growth often begins with something quieter than achievement: the willingness to listen.

The father and mother in this proverb offer more than household rules. They represent wisdom handed down through loving relationships—truth tested by experience, shaped by devotion, and offered for the protection of the next generation. Their instruction is not meant to crush the child’s freedom, but to guide it. They speak because they love, and the son is called to receive their counsel with humility.

This does not mean that every parental word is perfect or that harmful commands should be obeyed without discernment. Scripture’s vision is of instruction aligned with God’s wisdom—teaching that forms character, encourages righteousness, and leads toward life. Whether such wisdom comes through parents, faithful mentors, mature believers, or the witness of Scripture itself, we are asked not to abandon it merely because independence feels more attractive.

The verse describes wise instruction as “an ornament of grace” upon the head. In the imagined manuscript illumination, an angel places a flowering golden garland upon the listening son. The image reminds us that humility is not humiliating. A teachable spirit possesses its own beauty. Wisdom crowns a person with a grace that pride can never imitate.

The “chains about thy neck” are likewise pictured not as iron restraints, but as a jeweled necklace. Each golden link represents a virtue formed through faithful instruction: prudence, patience, obedience, courage, and charity. Godly teaching does not enslave us; it adorns and strengthens us. Worn near the heart, it becomes part of how we speak, choose, work, and love.

In the background, a narrow road leads toward a shining city. This reflects the deeper purpose of instruction. The counsel we receive today shapes the direction we travel tomorrow. Small acts of listening can keep our feet from destructive paths and turn us toward the light of God.

Whose wise counsel have you been tempted to dismiss? Perhaps today is an invitation to listen again. Open Scripture. Remember a faithful teacher’s words. Seek advice from someone whose life bears good fruit. The wisdom we humbly receive may become the very grace others later see shining through us.
