Verse of the day: Psalm 37:4

"Delight thyself also in the Lord: and he shall give thee the desires of thine heart."

The Cultivated Heart: Finding True Delight "Delight thyself also in the Lord: and he shall give thee the desires of thine heart." — Psalm 37:4

At first glance, it is easy to read this beloved verse from the Psalms as a transactional promise: if we muster up enough religious enthusiasm for God, He will reward us by granting our personal wish list. Yet, when we look deeper into the original Hebrew, the word for "delight" (anag) means to be soft, pliable, and exquisite. To delight in the Lord is to allow our stubborn, stone-like hearts to become soft and malleable in His hands.

When we truly delight in someone, our priorities shift. We want to know what they love, how they think, and what brings them joy. The same is true in our walk with God. As we spend time in His presence, soaking in His goodness and marveling at His grace, a quiet miracle takes place: our desires begin to change. God doesn't just hand us what we used to want; He plants His own desires deep within us. He gives us the desires of our heart by becoming the desire of our heart.

If we were to capture this spiritual truth in the style of a medieval illuminated manuscript, we would look to the ancient artists who used gold leaf and vibrant pigments to make the invisible visible. Imagine a kneeling figure wrapped in deep blue robes of devotion, holding up their own heart toward the heavens. This heart is not rigid; it is soft ground.

From the top of the page, golden rays of divine light—the presence of the Lord—pour down upon the figure. Wherever this heavenly light touches the offered heart, it bursts into bloom. Delicate white lilies of peace and vibrant red roses of love sprout directly from the soul. In the intricate borders of the page, songbirds lift their heads in effortless praise, and a restless stag finally finds rest beside a clear, flowing stream.

This medieval imagery reminds us that the human heart is like an enclosed garden. Left to ourselves, we often cultivate weeds of anxiety, ambition, and fleeting pleasure. But when we open the gates of our soul to delight in the Lord, He becomes the Master Gardener. He shines the golden light of His presence into our lives, softening our spirits and planting seeds of eternal purpose.

Today, take a breath and step away from the frantic pursuit of your own wish list. Offer your heart upward. Delight yourself in the warmth of His presence, and watch as He brings your deepest, truest desires into full and glorious bloom.
