Verse of the day: Psalm 63:1

"O God, thou art my God; early will I seek thee: my soul thirsteth for thee, my flesh longeth for thee in a dry and thirsty land, where no water is;"

There are mornings when we wake already thirsty. Before the day has asked anything of us, we feel the weight of what is missing: peace, direction, companionship, strength. Psalm 63 gives that feeling words. “O God, thou art my God; early will I seek thee.” The speaker does not wait until he has become calm or certain. He turns toward God while the thirst is still sharp.

That is why the verse’s opening matters so much. “Thou art my God” is not the conclusion of a successful search; it is where the search begins. The speaker knows whom he seeks, even while he feels far from satisfaction. His soul thirsts, and his flesh longs. Prayer here is not an escape from being human. It is the honest offering of his whole self—mind, heart, and body—to God.

In an illuminated manuscript, I imagine David kneeling on cracked ground beneath a sky just beginning to brighten. An empty vessel rests beside him. Neither the vessel nor the landscape can give him what he needs. Yet a touch of gold at the horizon draws the eye upward. The gold is not a shortcut out of the wilderness. It represents the possibility of God’s presence within it.

The image speaks to seasons when no answer arrives quickly. We may still need rest, food, help from others, or a change in our circumstances. The psalm does not ask us to pretend otherwise. Its “dry and thirsty land” remains dry. But it invites us to bring even our unmet needs into prayer rather than hide them until we feel more faithful.

Perhaps seeking God early means beginning there today: before we have solved the problem, before we have found the right words. We can say, “You are my God, and I am thirsty.” Such a prayer is small enough to carry into any morning. And like that first line of gold along the horizon, it turns us toward the One we hope to meet.
